The exhibition “Elephants” was developed by Xu Bing and Hans de Wolf and had the ambition to bring eight Chinese artists together for the first time in a Western capital. The Chinese artists presented themselves as participants in universal discussions, and not as representatives of a “Chinese” art world. Song Dong’s monumental installation, filled with objects found at the Brussels flea market, but also Liu Xiaodong’s portraits of Belgian artists, touched the hearts of the public. The Belgian and international press was unanimously enthusiastic.
