After a visit to the JRSLM group exhibition, where Géraldine Tobe was presented, Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort commissioned Hans De Wolf to present a project in response to the Brussels government’s 2022 mission to Kinshasa. The exhibition, KALUNGA, provided the first overview of Congolese artist Géraldine Tobe’s work. Her unique technique of painting with smoke enabled her to construct exhilarating images that confronted the public with snippets of her personal life story.

But the most miraculous of it all is the fact that it is light itself – under the form of little petrol cans – that creates deep dark shadows – unspeakable – by means of its eternal smoke that brings you elsewhere, everywhere
